Gurgaon: RWA president’s nephew shot dead in Sector 9

The victim’s family alleged that a property dispute is the reason for the murder

A 27-year-old property dealer was shot dead by a group of armed assailants on Thursday night in Sector 9. He was also the nephew of the residents’ welfare association (RWA) president of the sector.

The victim, Narendra Kataria of Basai village, used to play badminton daily near Kataria market. Around 8.30pm on Thursday, as he was getting into his Tata Safari SUV after finishing the game, three to four men arrived at the spot and opened fire on him, according to inspector Bijendra Singh, station house officer (SHO), Sector 9.

The SHO, who is also the case’s investigating officer, said it is not yet clear whether the assailants had been waiting for him or had just arrived in a car or on a motorcycle.

“It is however, clear, that they shot him with the intention of killing him. Seven shots were fired on his chest and shoulder, of which five hit him,” Singh said.

His brother, Bhagirath, who has registered a complaint with the police, alleged that Narendra was a victim of a property dispute.

“The dispute was over an acre of land in Bawal in Rewari. The land was sold to Narendra by his maternal uncle and the registry was executed as well. But the other party was creating some issues, according to the complainant,” Singh said.

He added that the family has filed the case against Lajpat Kaushik and Vijay Kaushik — both from Bawal.

The police, however, clarified that the accused have not been identified yet. “We have collected footage from two to three CCTV cameras in the area, but the videos are very grainy,” Singh said.

He added that they will first verify all the facts made by the complainant, but have informed the Rewari police regarding the people named in the complaint. “We will seek their clarification. We are investigating the matter,” he said.

The body was sent for a post-mortem examination at the civil hospital on Friday morning and a report is awaited.

“We have filed a case under sections 302 (murder), 34 (act done by several persons with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25 of the Arms Act,” Singh said.
