Gurgaon: Traffic diverted at Jharsa crossing as road caves in following sewer line burst

Huda and MCG officials said repair work is in progress but they cannot say how soon Jharsa Road could be opened to traffic again

Traffic diversions have been enforced on Jharsa Road after a sewer line burst on Sunday evening and led to a stretch of road caving in.

Although officials of the Haryana urban development authority (Huda) and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) are overseeing repairs on the spot, normal traffic flow isn’t likely to be restored on the stretch by Tuesday.

“Civic officials are carrying out repair work on the stretch and hence, we have enforced diversions and barricaded certain areas. There is significant work left as a large part of the road caved in. We will continue to update residents on the status of the road on social media,” deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Simardeep Singh, said.

The road from Sector 15 towards Jharsa and the one leading from Jharsa towards Sector 15 and Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway has been blocked for repairs.

However, the slip road from Delhi-Gurgaon expressway towards Jharsa village remains operational.

MCG officials said that they have been able to check the leakage from the sewage system and has started repair work, but couldn’t say when the work is likely to be over.

Those commuting on the stretch on a regular basis said an incident such as this was waiting to happen as the road is of sub-standard quality.

“Each year, officials carry out repair work on the stretch in two phases, before and after the monsoon. However, within a few months of being repaired, the road starts deteriorating again. We fear such incidents will keep happening till such time the officials start running cosmetic repairs on it,” Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Sector 37, said.
