Gurgaon: Water supply erratic to areas far from treatment plants

Sectors 21, 22 and 23, located over 15 kilometres from the Basai water treatment plant, are some pockets that have a perennial water supply problem.

Erratic water supply was reported from various parts of the city in the last few days. The areas located at an elevation or far from the water treatment plants are facing a crisis frequently, residents said.

Sectors 21, 22 and 23, located over 15 kilometres from the Basai water treatment plant, are some pockets that have a perennial water supply problem. Besides, areas such as DLF Phase 3 do not get adequate supply as they are at a higher level and supply does not reach there during summer because of low water pressure.

Dheeraj Kumar of DLF Phase 3 said, “We have been facing a frequent water supply problem in the last couple of weeks, and when we enquired with the officials, they said it was due to widening work on NH 8 and realignment of water pipelines. Water does not reach some areas of phase 3 and each of us use a booster. We are scared that we’ll have major trouble this summer.”

SK Chauhan of Sector 21 said, “We have been forced to buy water from private suppliers and we don’t know where they get water from. They sell water for Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500 per tanker. If we have proper supply with full force at least twice a day, there will be no requirement for private suppliers. We have stopped complaining to the MCG and the Huda as they are only responsible for the problem.”

The Basai plant is being cleaned by the Huda and it will take another couple of weeks to complete the work.

A Huda official, however, said there is no dearth of water. “We supply 70 MGD water daily and the demand is increasing,” Satbir Singh, SDO, Huda, said.

The MCG said plant cleaning should have been done earlier.

“We keep informing the Huda when water supply is less. Work such as plant cleaning and line alignment often disturb water supply,” Vikas Malik, MCG executive engineer, said.
