I was not driving the car, says Sehrawat’s son

Suraj, 19, while being escorted away in a white Maruti Ritz car, told HT, “I am innocent. I was not driving the car.”

Efforts to keep him away from the media glare seemed well-planned. First, his kin asked the journalists to move out of the court room. When a couple of them, including this reporter, refused to leave, defense lawyer Vishal Gupta pleaded to chief judicial magistrate Jasbir Singh to direct them out of the court room. Although it was an open-hearing, the judges can ask a few people to stay out to avoid any commotion inside the court room. HT learnt that a lawyer inside the court had even proposed that Suraj’s face be covered with a piece of cloth so as to prevent him from being photographed. However, Suraj’s lawyer had later rejected this suggestion.
