Rohtash surrendered before a local court on Saturday and was sent to police remand for a day. The court had earlier rejected his bail plea on June 29.

Tayal pleaded not guilty and his lawyer Vishal Gupta argued that the 68-feet borewell did not fall on his property.

Gupta also told the court that the borewell was covered with a stone slab until June 20, when Mahi's maternal uncle removed it as it hindered the parking of his auto-rickshaw.

Gupta said that about 200 borewells have been dug up in the area in complicity with the administration but only Tayal was being singled out.

The police on June 27 arrested the two contractors of the borewell and the court sent them to one-day police remand. Their lawyer said that they would move a bail application on Friday.
