Traffic came to a standstill as the road going towards Jaipur was blocked for more than an hour. Nearly 150 residents of Rajiv Colony took to the streets at 11am and shouted slogans against government authorities for not paying heed to their complaints regarding waterlogging in their area.

“Women from our colony have made several trips to government offices to complain about the problem. They have also taken up the matter with local authorities here, but no one has taken any action yet. We were forced to protest and block the Delhi-Jaipur Highway,” said Lal Singh Yadav, a resident.

The main cause of flooding in Rajiv Colony is choked drains which are blocked with sewage.

Residents said the sewage system has not been cleaned and there is no way for the rain water to drain out.

Rajiv Colony, which houses a population of about 10,000, has also seen an increase in skin diseases due to water stagnation. Heavy rain on Monday worsened the situation.

“The lanes have been flooded since the monsoon started. At times, there is knee-deep water which makes it difficult for school children and office-goers to move out of their houses," said Yadav.

"The clean-up vans were called immediately and work began. The water will be drained by Tuesday morning," said Sonia Thakran, the local councillor from Ward 27.
