Marathon for unity sees large participation in Gurgaon

Over 2,000 people participated in the ‘Run for Unity’ marathon, organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s Iron Man Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel at Tau Devi Lal stadium in the city on Sunday

Over 2,000 people participated in the ‘Run for Unity’ marathon, organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s Iron Man Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel at Tau Devi Lal stadium in the city on Sunday.

The marathon was flagged off by Haryana education minister Prof Ram Bilas Sharma and public works department (PWD) minister Rao Narbir Singh on the occasion of Haryana Day. The MLA of Sohna, Tejpal Tanwar, was also present at the event.

All leaders participated in the event and ran to motivate the runners.

PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh said, “During the Independence struggle when the British gave the option to rulers of provincial states that they could have their independent constitution as well as governance, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel united all the 565 provincial states and made modern India. Patel did this in just 100 days. Today, the country is remembering its hero of the pre-Independence days.”

Another marathon —Millennium City Marathon —was also held at the Tau Devi Lala Stadium on Sunday alongside Run for Unity.

Deputy commissioner of Gurgaon TL Satyaprakash, who ran the 21-km half marathon at the Millennium City marathon said that the two events, which happened side by side showed that Gurgaon had the potential to become a runners’ city. The next marathon would be organised in March 2016, Satyaprakash added.
