MCG commissioner Vijay Singh Dahiya on Wednesday asked his department officials to conduct physical verifications of all those engaged in sweeping and collection of garbage in their respective zones.

“Those engaged in sanitation will have to submit a passport-size photograph, residence proof and contract paper with the concerned company. The physical verification may take a day or two. Once this procedure is complete, we would check their presence during work hours, zone-wise,” said Dr Aruna Sangwan, sanitation in-charge, MCG.

The commissioner’s instruction for physical verification came after MCG officials of all four zones on Monday found several sweepers absent from duty, waste lying unattended along roadsides and many workers without uniform.

“Without a uniform or badge, it is difficult to identify whether the men engaged are authorised or not,” said a senior MCG official, adding that the number of sanitation workers in all four zones is less than half of the required strength.

“I have called a meeting of officials and experts to discuss biometric attendance system this week. I am trying my best to improve sanitation in rural and urban areas,” said Dahiya.

The MCG has already awarded sanitation tenders for Zone 1, 2 and 3 to three private contractors.

The workers sweep, collect and dispose of waste from the city at the Bandhwari waste treatment plant. MCG is yet to float tenders for Zone 4.
