On the third car-free Tuesday in the city, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) and several corporate executives collectively decided to identify stretches that can be developed as model urban streets.

The MCG might also enforce a cycle parking space at all public places in the city. The municipal commissioner said that notices will be sent to all hotels, clubs and malls to make space for cycle parking on their premises as soon as possible.

“Unfortunately, the planners in our department are still insensitive to the needs of pedestrians and cyclists. We also lack manpower and resources. But, we are trying our best to improve road designs and take up one project at a time,” Vikas Gupta, municipal commissioner of Gurgaon, said.

An urban street design worth Rs. 57 crore has already been approved for Old Delhi Road. The MCG will rope in private agencies to design and improve more roads in the city.

The MCG commissioner will meet the corporate leaders again on Thursday to discuss what projects and road stretches could be adopted by private groups. Representatives from industrial body NASSCOM and other companies said they were willing to help with ideas and financial aid to adopt some projects.

Corporate executives and promoters of car-free day cycled to the MCG office in Electronic City from the Huda City Centre Metro station on Tuesday morning. The team was also accompanied by Sudhir Krishna, chairman of BIS committee on standards for smart cities.

“I realised it is possible to cycle on Gurgaon roads if proper tracks are laid out. Gurgaon is moving towards becoming smart in its approach towards urban development,” Krishna said.
