Pedestrian bridges bring down accidents

Several initiatives taken to ensure the safety of commuters on the accident-prone Gurgaon Expressway have finally yielded results.

This is evident as only 55 accidental deaths were registered in 2012, the lowest number so far, compared to the figures of previous years since 2008.

A total of 392 accident deaths on the expressway were reported between 2008 and 2012. Nearly 86 deaths were reported in 2011.

After the Haryana government installed footover bridges (FOBs) and iron fencing on the expressway median, the number of casualties has decreased considerably.

The maximum number of accidental deaths (115) were reported in 2008, when there was no iron fencing on the medians or FOBs.

Following this, local residents had staged a series of demonstrations against the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for not providing adequate crossover facilities on the expressway.

In 2012, the maximum number of accident deaths (25) took place on the stretch from Sirhaul (Delhi border) toll plaza to Rajiv Chowk though the stretch has two FOBs. The third FOB will come up near the Iffco Chowk crossing.
