The rise in petrol price on Friday midnight and the expected hike in CNG, LPG and diesel prices have forced many residents of the city to reconsider their plans for spending.
For 69-year-old SN Gupta, stepping out of home even for a small purchase would be like burning a hole in his pocket.
"With this increase in prices, my monthly budget is likely to shoot by 40%. The worst part is I can’t even use a two-wheeler as it is very unsafe for a senior citizen. I have to take out my car for travelling even short distances," said the resident of Sector 23 A.
From July 1, the price of CNG too is likely to increase.
"The CNG price is going to increase on Monday. We are going to have a board meeting, after which the price rise will be decided," said Satish Chopra, chairman and managing director, Haryana City Gas Distribution Limited.
The petrol price, which has increased by R1.82 per litre, has directly impacted the prices of fruits and vegetables. Vendors have claimed that the prices of these goods have shot up by nearly 50%. "Every year during this time, the prices of fruits and vegetables increase due to the dry summer. But this year, the hike will be more due to the increase in fuel rates," said Vicky Solanki, a vegetable vendor in Sector 31.Consumers, on the other hand, claim that the rise in fruit and vegetable prices have not improved the quality of goods.
