Rain aftermath: Road in Gurgaon go missing under potholes

Despite tall claims by civic agencies, city went under water after Wednesday’s rain and residents now cope with battered roads, disease outbreak

The 32mm rain on Wednesday exposed the preparedness of the district administration and civic bodies once again. The city witnessed massive waterlogging in every nook and corner confining many people to their homes, while others struggled to cross waterlogged lanes.

Once the water receded, it left behind badly battered and potholed stretches making life more miserable for residents.

Rashmi Pandey, a resident of DLF Phase-4, said, “Our 400 metre lane was completely submerged. We waited for four to five hours for the rainwater to recede so that we could step out. Water even entered our home. But that was the end. The worst part was the sewage backflow making the entire area unhygienic . Even after five hours, the lane was not in a usable condition — there was sludge and muck all over the place, not to mention the foul odour. We are living in an upscale locality and we cannot imagine such hell.”

The waterlogging posed similar problems to residents in other parts of the city too.

The rain brought disaster to city roads as well. The roads developed potholes in many parts including the national highways, Old Delhi Road, Mehrauli Road and internal roads.

Sanjiv Saxena, a resident Sector 45, said, “Rain damaged our internal roads, causing big potholes and now we will have to wait for months for the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to the repair roads.”

Deputy commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh said, “The administration is taking steps to reduce waterlogging possibility. The teams of officials are on the job.”

MR Sharma, chief engineer MCG, said, “We are taking every measure to tackle waterlogging and are gearing up to improve the situation.”
