Sewage treatment capacity to go up

The Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) is all set to enhance its sewage treatment capacity from 118 mld to 338 mld (million litres per day) by the end of next year, when its two additional sewage treatment plants (STPs) would be ready for operation.

Two additional STPs will come up with an estimated cost of Rs. 200 crore at the premises of existing Behrampur and Dhanvapur treatment plants. The Behrampur plant has the capacity to treat 50 mld water while Dhanvapur unit can treat 68 mld of water.

While visiting the sites on Monday, Huda chief engineer Pankaj Kumar, told HT that the two plants are expected to be operational by September 2012 as contractors have been told to complete the work on time.

"The delay will not be tolerated at all as the city requires the facility at any cost," said the chief engineer. Huda will also improve sewage treating technology to increase the capacity of the existing two STPs.

"The technology used in new STPs is advanced. It treats more water in lesser time and also quality of water is much better," said the contractor involved in building an STP at Behrampur.
