According to police officials, since there is not enough space they have stopped impounding vehicles of offenders. The police used to park impounded vehicles at Sector 29 police station.

"Space crunch at the Metro police station has led to this situation. The roads are occupied by private vehicles, taxis and auto-rickshaws. We can't seize the vehicles of motorists who do not carry relevant documents," said a police official.

Such vehicles may be involved in accidents, cheating, thefts and other criminal cases. The police must keep such vehicles till the trial is over and the court grants permission to release them.

"It is the police's duty to ensure the safety of impounded vehicles. But considering the space in our police station, it is not possible to accommodate the vehicles. We have to request the Sector 29 police station to keep the vehicles. To avoid the situation, we usually do not impound vehicles," he added.

Generally, no one comes to claim the impounded vehicles, so it's difficult for us to manage the increasing number of vehicles, he said.
