Special cell to help trace missing persons

The city police have decided to set up a special cell to solve cases involving missing persons and unidentified bodies that were earlier considered unsolved or closed. The special team will comprise 10 members headed by a police inspector. Leena Dhankhar and Siddhartha Rai report.

“All formalities regarding setting up of the special team have been completed and it will become functional soon,” said police commissioner Alok Mittal. “Posting orders have already been issued and inspector Ranjeep has been made the unit in-charge,” he added.

The police commissioner said the special unit would function from a Sector 31-based office, used by the economic offences wing-2 before it was shifted to Sector 51.

The special unit will also deal with cases pertaining to missing minors, as these are usually considered as kidnapping incidents.

As per police records, of the 514 persons who went missing in Haryana till April 30 this year, 117 persons were from Gurgaon alone. Of these, 51 persons have been traced.

During the same period, 32 unidentified bodies were found, of which only two have been identified.
