Tenant murdered over non-payment of rent

A 39-year-old man was on Saturday evening murdered by a group of five persons on the directions of his landlords.

The victim, identified as Nikhil Negi, lived in a rented flat in Sushant Lok Phase II along with his wife and a nine-year-old child. For the past few months, he had been having problems paying rent to his landlord couple, Kartar Singh and his wife.

Sources said his landlords had been increasing the rent amount every passing month which Negi was finding difficult to pay on time. He had even started depositing valuables with the couple as mortgage against the dues.

Fed up with arguments with the landlord, Negi — employed with a private auto company —had decided to shift to Kendriya Vihar. On Saturday, Negi went to the couple to clear his dues. The two got into an argument following which Singh called some men who strangled Nikhil to death.

The accused couple is on the run.
