A condom is a barrier method of contraception.

A 31 year old wanted to know if using a condom during sex will have any long term adverse effects. She had a steady partner and wanted to avoid pregnancy. She disliked other methods of contraception.

A condom is a barrier method of contraception. It prevents the semen (containing sperms) from coming in contact with the female genital tract and hence reduces the chances of fertilisation. Condoms can thus help in avoiding pregnancy and also prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

A condom needs to be worn on an erect penis. It can only be used once. He was reassured that there would be no long term adverse effects. He was warned that no method of contraceptive was 100 per cent fool proof and reports of condom ripping are not uncommon. Rarely do people have an allergy to latex rubber which is used in the making of a condom. All methods of contraception were explained in details.
