Getting so passionate about your work that it consumes you entirely can warp judgment and make you lose objectivity, warn experts.
“It does not matter what you do but there has to be a line drawn somewhere, else it will take its toll on the mind,” says Dr Rajesh Sagar, professor, department of psychiatry at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
“If you have reached a point where you are stretching your limits endlessly, or there are people who perform all sorts of experts with themselves, it is going to cause serious harm to the person,” he said.
The worst sufferers are those who have no outlet, which means no one to share their thoughts with.
“Such people keep holding on to a lot of stuff internally, and are on the verge of exploding at some point in time,” said Dr Sagar.
How to tell whether the person has reached the breaking point? According to the experts, there are always signs that should be enough either for the person himself or the family to ring a warning bell.
“The thumb rule is any changes in behaviour must not be ignored — the person may have been social earlier but is gradually turning aloof or was aloof earlier and suddenly starts socialising,” said clinical psychologist Pulkit Sharma, Imago - Centre for Self.
“Also, if your life is getting affected in any way, it is sign enough to tell there is trouble brewing and it is time to seek professional help,” he said.
