The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were announced by Andy Serkis (and butchered by Tiffany Haddish) on Tuesday. While the pool was diverse and inclusive - African American and female nominees made history - there were some glaring snubs as well.
Twitter users lit up with angry and disappointed remarks about their favourite movies being left out. A particularly sore subject for many people was the complete shunning of Wonder Woman, a critically adored blockbuster that many considered an outside bet for Best Director (Patty Jenkins) or Best Picture. But it didn’t even receive a technical nod.
Similarly, the omission of Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name) and The Lego Batman Movie were mentioned - in the case of Batman, producer Chris Miller even posted a sad GIF in reaction. Phil Lord, who co-directed the Lego Movie with Miller, had previously posted a similar response - an Oscar statue made entirely of Legos - when that film was snubbed in 2015.
