In what is fast becoming India’s most important cinema event, the Mumbai Film Festival has lined up an impressive jury.
The renowned Chariots of Fire director and Academy Award nominee, Hugh Hudson, will head its main competition jury. The movie won the 1982 Oscar for Best Picture. A year earlier, it was at Cannes competition.
The other members of the jury will be Roger Spottiswoode (director of James Bond thriller, Tomorrow Never Dies and the Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer, The 6th Day), acclaimed Polish director, Jerzy Skolimowski, and the young Korean director, Na Hong-Jin (lauded for his films, The Chaser and The Yellow Sea, which was shown in Cannes’ A Certain Regard this year).
Indian movie-maker Basu Chatterjee will preside over the jury of the Harmony Celebrate Age section, which encourages a cinema that looks beyond the stereotypes of old age and the pluses of aging. Chatterjee has made some delightful fare like Rajnigandha, Chitchor, Choti Si Baat and Khatta Meetha.
Director-producer Kiran Rao (Dhobi Ghat and Aamir Khan’s wife) leads the jury of the short film competition, Dimensions Mumbai. The other members of the jury are Vikramaditya Motwane (whose Udaan was part of this year’s Cannes’ A Certain Regard), Nishikant Kamat (Mumbai Meri Jaan), Onir (My Brother Nikhil) and actress Renuka Shahane.
Supported by Reliance Entertainment and organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image), the Mumbai Film Festival will take place from October 13 to 20, and is tipped to grow better and bigger than what was till now considered India’s premier festival, International Film Festival of India, that plays from November 22 to December 2. In fact, the Mumbai Festival is the only one that is run independent of government support.
