I would love to work in India: Colin Firth

Even so, a day after he won the BAFTA award for Best Actor for The King’s Speech, British actor Colin Firth says he isn’t sure if there are any takers for him in Bollywood.

His speech has left the world speechless — grabbing awards and getting critical acclaim. Even so, a day after he won the BAFTA award for Best Actor for The King’s Speech, British actor Colin Firth says he isn’t sure if there are any takers for him in Bollywood.



"I would love to work in India. If you have heard me sing or seen me dance, I don’t think I’ll be getting an invitation from there any time soon," Firth says.

In the film, Firth plays the role of King George VI, who had a severe stammer. Though, he played royalty to the T, he says he’s still clueless about life as a royal. "Playing a member of the royal family remains a mystery. I often feel I’ve played a character and come away with perhaps just a glimpse at what that life might be. I’ve played soldiers, and even though I can’t fully imagine it, I’ve got a whiff of it. Partly because I’ve spoken to soldiers, and I’ve listened to some very engaging and stirring accounts of what that life is like. I haven’t had that with a member of the royal family, and I’ve come out on the other side of this, without a clue as to what it might be like."



While the filming of The King’s Speech was on in 2009, Firth says his character’s stammer would interfere with his normal way of speaking too. "I was doing press at the time (for his film A Single Man) and was promoting the film and travelling a lot and it would interfere with my fluency. Derek Jacobi (British actor) who had portrayed a stammer seriously, said ‘When the job’s over, don’t worry, it will go away’."

“There are far worse things to have to face in this world than that! It’s actually a wonderful thing to have made an impact as an actor. And it’s a lot of fun for my mum to see me playing the romantic guy who gets the girl in the end.”
