He is known as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder on The X-Files and as Hank Moody on Californication.
In 1996, People magazine named him one of its 50 Most Beautiful People. American actor, writer and director, David Duchovny, 50, has to his credit Golden Globe awards for his work in both the TV shows.
So, which one has been more enjoyable? “The X-Files was much more demanding physically and of my time. Californication feels smaller in a way and satisfies my desire to do comedy. Can’t say if one was more enjoyable,” says Duchovny, who always wanted to do a little bit of comedy.
About Californication, where he is seen in an odyssey of self-indulging vices – alcohol, drugs & women — what appealed to him about the premise of the show? “I liked the comedy and the idea of a love story playing out underneath it,” he says describing the show as “good clean fun” and its humour as “adult, articulate, verbal and slapstick”.
Did the actor, who has two children, have any reservations while picking up the role of Hank, who many think is an “oversexed novelist”? “Well, I don’t think Hank is oversexed. If you look at other shows on television in America, they have more intimate physical relationships than Hank does,” says Duchovny.
So does he show it to his kids? “Oh no my kids are only ten and seven years old. There’s no way I would show it to my kids. I’d be shocked if there were people showing this show or even The X-Files to a ten and seven-year-old. These shows have mature themes,” he says. For Duchovny, it’s not just about acting. He has also tried his hand at directing. “That’s really something that I enjoy and feel comfortable doing. I loved doing House of D (a 2005 drama film directed by him). I certainly would want to continue directing movies,” he says.
