The distributor of Steve McQueen's Twelve Years a Slave, Fox Searchlight, has announced that the movie will be released on December 27 in North American cinemas.

Just like The Wolf of Wall Street, Grace of Monaco and Monuments Men, Twelve Years a Slave will be released before the December 31, 2013 Oscars deadline and will thus throw its hat into the 2014 ring.

This movie, co-produced by Brad Pitt, will tell the true story of Solomon Northup, the son of a freed slave who ends up enduring the same ordeal his father went through for twelve years. Chiwetel Ejiofor will play the lead role.

The cast of Twelve Years a Slave will also feature Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt (in a small part), Michael K. Williams, and McQueen favorite Michael Fassbender, who starred in his last two films, Hunger and Shame.
