Last week, the sequel about the popular sleuth, played by Robert Downey Jr. with costar Jude Law, took $29.6 million, which Underworld in 3D and IMAX could surpass.

The story follows Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a war humans wage to wipe out both immortal vampire and lycan species.

Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, the action horror films also stars Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta) and Michael Ealy (2 Fast 2 Furious).

Underworld Awakening opens in more than 30 territories around the world including in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Russia, the UK and North America. The debut also includes 50 IMAX digital theaters internationally.
