A 12-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by her father, delivered a baby boy at the Civil Hospital in Gujarat’s Surat on Monday night.
The hospital said that both the mother and the new-born were healthy.
“The around eight month pregnant patient was suffering from extreme pain. A medical team had to do caesarean section as normal delivery could have been complicated,” said a hospital staffer. “The new born is a male child and weighed 2.8 kg at the time of birth.”
Earlier during her pregnancy, the girl was treated thrice at the same hospital.
The girl’s parents are divorced. Her mother had registered rape case against the father on June 26 with Kakrapad police station in Surat. The case, registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was transferred to Songadh police station in nearby Tapi district, where her father lives.
According to a relative, the girl, a class 8 student who was staying with her mother in Surat, used to visit her father settled in Vyara town of Tapi occasionally during holidays after the couple got divorced.
The family said that a leading diamond trader has come forward to support the girl as well as the new-born. It has been learnt that new-born is likely to be sent to an orphanage so that the girl can complete her studies.
