3 mowed down on Del-Mum Expressway; protest triggers traffic jam over 20 km

Two of the three women killed were working inside the expressway median railing, while the three were outside when the speeding car hit them

Angry residents blocked the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and triggered a traffic jam stretching around 20 km on both sides, leaving thousands of commuters stranded, after a speeding car hit and killed three women mowing the grass on the expressway median at Jamwaramgarh in Rajasthan’s Jaipur district on Sunday evening. Jamwaramgarh residents protested, even as the driver abandoned the car about a kilometre from the accident site and fled.

Police rushed the three women to a hospital, where two were declared dead. The third died during treatment. Rajendra Kumar, a Rajasthan Police officer, identified the three as Prem Devi, 55, Manfuli Devi, 50 and Kaushalya Devi, 45.

Police said the three were part of a five-woman group mowing grass. Two were working inside the median railing, while the three were outside when the speeding car hit them.

BJP leader caught in traffic jam

Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajasthan unit chief Madan Rathore and former legislator Gyandev Ahuja, who were travelling from Delhi to Jaipur, were among those caught in the traffic jam. Rathore spoke to top officials, following which police teams were rushed to pacify the protesters from Jamwaramgarh, Kanota and Andhi.
