While the guards of a Chennai juvenile home were busy trying to break up a fight between two groups, 33 inmates escaped in a plot that could easily be from a movie.
As part of their well-laid plan, about 70 inmates of the Government Observation Home on Parusuvakkam High Road created a diversion by starting a noisy fight on Monday, while 33 others scaled the juvenile home’s wired and spiked boundary wall to make good their escape.
The incident was caught on a phone camera by a passerby.
The plan, however, fell apart soon. Within about eight hours, 20 of the boys were caught from different places, a short distance from the observation home. Police said the others will be apprehended soon.
A couple of the escapees, fearing strict repercussion for their escape bid, attempted suicide by slitting their throats and were taken to a hospital, sources said.
As the news of the escape spread, the parents of the inmates sought details about the well-being of their wards and even held protests outside the juvenile home demanding information.
Jayapavitra, the mother of one of the inmates, claimed her son was caught for the petty crime of driving without a license but framed in criminal cases. Worried about his well-being, she urged the police to trace her son if he was missing from the home.
