Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said there were reports of anti-social elements instigating the Madhya Pradesh farmers’ agitation, which led to the police firing that claimed five lives.
Singh was in Mumbai to attend a BJP meeting held to commemorate three years of Modi rule at the Centre.
The Union minister told mediapersons that the government was sensitive to the plight of the protesting farmers in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. “I have heard that some forces are instigating farmers. However, as an inquiry is underway, it is better to wait for the report,” he said, adding that attempts to politicise the issue must cease.
“We have fought alongside farmers in their protests, and we understand their plight. It hurts us when there are suicides or farmers are shot. However, some view these situations as cruel political jokes,” claimed Singh.
Singh also slammed Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, stating that his party was responsible for the farmers’ plight today. “Our government would never do anything to betray farmers. In Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, we have two capable chief ministers who are sensitive to the issue. I would recommend cooperating with them to resolve the issue.”
The minister ruled out using security forces to quell the farmers’ agitation. “For now, we are doing everything we can to address the farmers’ problems in these two states,” he said.
