Arvind Kejriwal reignites ‘free revdi’ row: ‘People of Gujarat want...’

Arvind Kejriwal yet again made a mention of ‘revdi culture’ in response to PM Modi's jibe last week.

Arvind Kejriwal on Monday reignited a week-old debate as he yet again made a reference to a comment by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the “freebie culture”. The prime minister had compared the freebies to “revri” - a sweet popular in north India while inaugurating the Bundelkhand expressway project in Uttar Pradesh, which is worth around ₹14,000 crore. The comment was seen as jibe at the AAP, which has been promising free electricity in poll-bound states after the model's acceptance in the national capital.

“People of Gujarat want free electricity and better schools and hospitals. People want change. If politicians are getting free electricity, then people should also get it. It should not be called free 'Revdi',” Arvind Kejriwal was quoted as saying by news agency ANI on Monday.

His comments came after he - with Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann by his side - criticised the central government’s imposition of GST on food products, while also making an appeal to rethink. He even drew a comparison with the actions of Britishers in the colonial era.

“People are so fed up with inflation. Everything is getting expensive. A few days back, the centre imposed GST on curd. Lassi, Chaach and other food items have GST. Rice and wheat have GST too. This is what British used to do. Even amid inflation, taxes are being imposed,” he said.

Arvind Kejriwal is known for his criticism of the BJP, and his Aam Aadmi Party has been embroiled in several political rows linked to the BJP this week.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Singapore visit not being cleared, Delhi’s liquor policy and LG Vinai Kumar Saxena’s recommendation of CBI probe and his party’s allegations of posters of PM Modi being forcibly put at a Delhi government event are the four issues that cropped up - all this happened within a week.
