Notably, Boris Johnson was earlier scheduled to visit India as the chief guest of the Republic Day parade in January this year, but his visit was cancelled due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) situation. The meeting between Modi and Boris Johnson at the COP26 summit in Glasgow was the first in-person interaction between the two leaders ever since the British premier's visit to India was cancelled twice.

The leaders talked about a host of subjects, including bilateral cooperation to mitigate climate change. It was during this interaction that Prime Minister Modi reiterated his desire to welcome Johnson in India soon, an official release stated. Within a day, foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla confirmed that the British prime minister has accepted the invite.

“Both governments remain committed to the implementation of the Roadmap, within prescribed timelines,” India's high commissioner to the UK, Gaitri Issar Kumar, said ahead of the prime ministerial talks. “Accordingly, we are looking to launch negotiations in November 2021 for an Interim Agreement to be signed in March 2022 and eventually a comprehensive agreement, if all goes according to schedule, by November 2022.”

Prime Minister Modi also congratulated Johnson for successfully organising the COP26 and for championing global action for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The two prime ministers reviewed the implementation of the Roadmap 2030 priorities, particularly in trade and economy, people-to-people, health, defence and security areas.
