AGARTALA: A three-member team of Congress leaders on Monday met Tripura chief minister Manik Saha to seek an impartial probe against miscreants who indulged in violence in parts of the state after the bypoll results were announced.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told reporters after meeting Saha that they want a fair probe into the violence.
“We talked to the chief minister and demanded an inquiry into the violent incidents. He told us that he is trying to bring the situation under control,” Chowdhury said.
Chowdhury, who was accompanied by two other Congress MPs Naseer Hussain and Gaurav Gogoi, also meet people injured in the violence at the hospital and will report the team’s findings to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
According to the Congress, 20 people including Tripura Congress chief Birajit Sinha were injured in Sunday’s violence. Police, however, said injuries to only three people were reported to them.
The declaration of results saw incidents of violence across Tripura, with the CPI(M) alleging that one of their party offices was ransacked by unidentified miscreants.
The ruling BJP won three assembly seats and the Congress bagged one in the Tripura by-elections. Chief minister Manik Saha was among the BJP winners, while Sudip Roy Barman of the Congress, who quit the BJP and joined the Congress, won from his home turf in Agartala, beating the BJP’s Ashok Sinha by 3,163 votes. The BJP previously held three and the CPI(M) one of these four seats.
