Crane collapses at Jewar Expressway construction site, at least 3 dead, rescue ops underway

At least three died after a gantry crane used in the construction of a flyover on the Jewar Expressway connecting Faridabad collapsed onto a makeshift shelter at a construction site in Haryana’s Faridabad on Thursday, police said.

The incident took place near Panhera Khurd village under the Chhainsa police station jurisdiction between 1.30 pm and 2 pm, public relations officer of Faridabad Police Yashpal Yadav said.

“Police received information about the accident around 3pm after which rescue workers with cutting equipment went to the spot,” he said.

“Efforts are still going on to cut or lift the collapsed part of the crane and the container to reach the other workers. The collapsed equipment weighs several ton,” he said.

Officers said that several shipping containers were at the site and were being used as makeshift site offices or resting places by officials, contractors and workers.
