Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that India is making progress in shifting to renewable energy sources. He was addressing the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS).
The Prime Minister highlighted that India is using ethanol, has implemented Ujjwala schemes and distributed LED bulbs in rural areas in a bid to switch to renewable and sustainable modes of energy.
He said, “Renewable energy is picking speed in India. We are well on track to setting up 450 GW of generating renewable energy by 2030. India’s private sector and several individuals are contributing to this (target).”
PM Modi also pointed out that sustainable development is not possible without the equitable distribution of resources. The Prime Minister also said that India is committed towards achieving the targets set at the Paris Climate Change Conference in 2015.
He said, “We committed to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 33-35 per cent from 2005 levels. You'll be happy to know that a drop of 24 percent of emission intensity has already been achieved.”
PM Modi also said that climate change impacts people from lower socio-economic strata and said that climate justice should focus on growth with compassion for people belonging to lower socioeconomic strata.
He said, “Climate justice also means giving the developing countries enough space to grow. When each and every one of us understands our individual and collective duties, climate justice will be achieved.”
