Modi’s four-nation trip Highlights: PM says Europe hit hard by terrorism, meets Angela Merkel in Germany

In the first leg of his six-day trip, he will hold talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel under the framework of India-Germany Intergovernmental Consultations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Schloss Meseberg on Monday as he landed in Berlin on the first leg of his four-nation tour of Germany, Spain, Russia and France.

Modi is accompanied by minister for science and technology Harsh Vardhan, MoS for new and renewable energy Piyush Goyal, MoS for commerce and industry Nirmala Seetharaman and MoS for external affairs MJ Akbar.

On May 30, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merkel will have a luncheon meeting with senior business leaders before inaugurating the Indo-German Business Forum.

Modi, in an interview to German newspaper ‘Handelsblatt’ said, “Europe has been hit hard by terrorism”.

“To our mind, terrorism is the gravest challenge facing humanity. Europe must play a lead role in developing an effective global response under the aegis of the United Nations to deal with this menace,” he said.

7:55 pm: PM Modi tweets he has reached Germany.

PM Modi and Chancellor Angela Merkel will discuss issues of mutual interest in an informal setting over dinner at Schloss Meseberg, an 18th-century palace, nearly 80 km northwest of Berlin.
