Miracle in Telangana: One-day old infant survives after being dumped in dry well

The baby was rescued after some villagers heard his cries and handed over to officials of the Integrated Child Development Services .

A one-day old boy was rescued from an abandoned well in a healthy condition on Sunday a day after he was dumped in it in Telangana’s Medak district, police said on Monday.

The incident happened at Kagaz Maddur village on Sunday. The police handed the infant to officials of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) in Medak district on Monday and they would be shifting the child to Sisu Vihar (Child Care Centre) in the neighbouring Sangareddy district headquarters later in the day.

Police said some villagers who were passing by the abandoned well on Sunday morning heard the cries of the infant. They immediately alerted the other villagers and one of them got down into the well with the help of a rope and brought the child up. The villagers then called the police.

“It appeared the child was dumped in the well the previous night hours after he was born. Luckily, the child had no injuries on the body. We immediately called an ambulance and shifted the infant to hospital in Narsapur, where the doctors declared that he was in perfect health,” Narsapur circle inspector of police Srinivas Reddy said.

Senior Congress leader and former women and child welfare minister Sunitha Laxma Reddy visited the hospital to enquire about the baby’s health.

“The abandonment of the one-day old infant as a blot on humanity,” said Andhra Pradesh child rights association president P Achyuta Rao. He demanded stern action against the parents of the child.
