Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the hike in fuel prices, for “punishing” the people by the high taxes on petrol and diesel.

“Post Demonetisation disaster and shoddy GST Implementation, Modiji is now punishing the common Indian by massive taxation on petrol and diesel,” said Gandhi in a tweet.

His comment came after new union minister KJ Alphons on Saturday stoked a controversy by saying people who own bikes and cars are not starving and can afford to pay higher prices for fuel.
