Opposition to corner Modi govt over demonetisation in Parliament and outside

The Congress has roped in the Left, Trinamool, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party as part of a group of 13 outfits that will protest in the Parliament complex against the government’s demonetisation move.

Wednesday will likely be the Opposition’s day in Parliament and outside.

The Congress has roped in the Left, Trinamool, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party as part of a group of 13 outfits that will protest in the Parliament complex against the government’s demonetisation move.

And after the protest concludes, the parties are likely to disrupt the House — like they have done in the past four days — over the Narendra Modi-led government’s decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes.

An unflagging BJP, however, continues to evade the Opposition’s demand that Modi clarify issues related to demonetisation in Parliament.

The protests will also spill over outside the Parliament complex with West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee sitting on a dharna in Jantar Mantar against demonetisation. Banerjee, along with her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal had earlier served a three-day ultimatum to Modi to withdraw what they called a “draconian measure.”

In the Rajya Sabha, the Centre has listed two more bills even as it waits to finish the debate on demonetisation.

No development on the bills is expected, with the Opposition and the government on a collision course over demonetisation.
