A western disturbance will bring snowfall and rainfall in north and northwest India between Monday and Wednesday, with precipitation peaking on Tuesday.
Delhi will get rain in the latter part of Tuesday and dense fog is likely to envelop the city on Thursday and Friday, according to the weather office.
This is welcome news for the region that suffered a heavy rainfall deficit this winter. Between October and December 2017 the rainfall deficit was 8% across India, but 53% below normal for the northwest region, India Meteorological Department data show.
A western disturbance refers to a system of low pressure that moves from the west to the east, bringing moisture from Eurasian water bodies, and is responsible for winter rain in northwestern India and snowfall in the Himalayan tracts. Such conditions have been weak this winter, with limited impact on north India.
Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to get scattered to widespread rain and snowfall. Haryana, Chandigarh and western Uttar Pradesh may get widespread rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, while scattered rain is expected in north Rajasthan, Punjab and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
