Doctors in Jamtara stitched a road accident victim’s wounds with cloth sewing thread, instead of using suture. The patient is now fighting for life with infection in Patliputra Medical College Hospital, (PMCH) Dhanbad.
The bizarre treatment was administered at Sadar hospital in Jamtara district, 230 km from Ranchi. The victim, Viru Mohli (30), was referred to PMCH for advanced treatment, where doctors said his condition due to use of unsterilised and infected thread was critical.
Mohli, a resident of Pajania, met with an accident after his bike skidded off the road on Thursday. His family members admitted him to Jamtara Sadar hospital.
Due to serious wound inside his mouth and on face, doctors resorted to surgical intervention. However, the doctors used cloth sewing thread for stitching. When bleeding from the mouth did not stop and the patient’s condition deteriorated, the hospital referred him to PMCH .
Doctors and nurses attending him at PMCH confirmed that cloth sewing thread was used for stitching which caused infection and aggravated the wound.

{{/usCountry}}Dr DP Bhadani, head of the surgery department at PMCH, said that use of unsterilised surgical suture could lead to infection. Before stitching, sterilisation of surgical suture is mandatory, he added.
However, surgeon at Jamtara hospital Dr Marshal Aind said on Friday he will inquire into the incident. “It is not in my knowledge. Action will be taken against the guilty,” he said over telephone from Jamtara.
