Hospital authorities had issued a bulletin reporting a “slight decline” in Karunanidhi’s health due to “age-related ailments” on Thursday night. Security was beefed up at the DMK leader’s Gopalapuram residence the following morning even as hundreds of party members arrived to offer their respects. Dignitaries from other political parties who dropped by included Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief Vaiko, state BJP head Tamilisai Soundararajan and Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan.

“Having such a fever after a tracheostomy procedure is usual. Stalin (Karunanidhi’s son and DMK working president) told me that he is fine. I am confident that he will bounce back with the same magnetic voice,” Vaiko told reporters after the visit.

Stalin has thanked the Prime Minister, President, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and other leaders for their wishes. “I am extremely grateful for their offers of help. Thalaivar is getting the best medical care and treatment. We hope he will recover soon,” he tweeted.
