Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Sunday to review India’s security preparedness amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The prime minister was fully briefed on the situation in Ukraine and its global fallout, the position of the Russian and Ukrainian forces. He was also informed of the assessment whether the situation would escalate.
Those who attended the meeting included defence minister Rajnath Singh, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, external affairs minister S Jaishankar, national security adviser Ajit Doval, cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, foreign secretary Harsh Shringla and defence secretary Dr Ajay Kumar.
In the wake of the missile attacks on the US consulate in Iraq’s Kurdistan, the prime minister was briefed on India’s security preparedness on the northern and western borders along with maritime and air defence, an official statement said.
“The Prime Minister was briefed on latest developments and different aspects of India’s security preparedness in the border areas as well as in the maritime and air domain. The Prime Minister was also briefed on the latest developments in Ukraine, including the details of Operation Ganga to evacuate Indian nationals, along with some citizens of India’s neighbouring countries, from Ukraine,” the statement added.
So far, India has been able to rescue around 20,000 stranded citizens in more than 80 special evacuation flights. Meanwhile, external affairs minister S Jaishankar will issue a statement on Operation Ganga in the second leg of the budget session which begins on Monday.
