Blast heard outside Punjab BJP office in Chandigarh, police say ‘crude-type’ device used

A blast was heard outside the BJP's Punjab unit headquarters on Wednesday, following which police teams reached the site.

The incident took place after 5 pm in Sector 37 in Chandigarh, There are no reports of major damage following the explosion, according to senior BJP leaders.

Police teams reached the site and cordoned off the area. Initial investigation pointed to a “crude-type” device being thrown outside the office, senior superintendent of police Kanwardeep Kaur told reporters. said.

Former Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma took to X to confirm the incident, also sharing photographs in the aftermath.

“…Likely Blast outside Punjab BJP Office Sector 37 Chandigarh. Around 30 minutes ago. Police is finding out the reason of Blast,” Sharma said.

""We received information at around 5 pm that an explosion-like sound was heard near the Punjab BJP office," Kaur said.

"Our crime branch and the operation cell also reached here," she said, adding that a team from Central Forensic Laboratory was also rushed to the site.

The party's state media cell head Vineet Joshi Joshi, who heard the blast, responded to the incident, saying “How did it take place? We could see some signs on the boundary wall. Only police can provide details.” He further told reporters, "It is a matter of concern if a blast took place outside the party office."
