Amid a controversy over burial of late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said the veteran Tamil politician deserved a burial space near the Anna Memorial in Marina beach like former chief minister J Jayalalithaa as he was an expression of the voice of the people.

Gandhi hoped that the Tamil Nadu government, which refused DMK burial space for Karunanidhi in Marina, would be “magnanimous” in this time of grief.

“Like Jayalalitha ji, Kalaignar was an expression of the voice of the Tamil people. That voice deserves to be given space on Marina Beach. I am sure the current leaders of Tamil Nadu will be magnanimous in this time of grief,” Gandhi said on Twitter.

Rejecting the DMK’s demand for a burial space at Marina, the AIADMK government offered space at Gandhi Mandapam on Sardar Patel road, near the memorials of former chief ministers C Rajagopalachari and K Kamraj.

DMK working president M K Stalin, recalling the long public life of Karunanidhi — a five-time chief minister and 13-time MLA — had written to current CM, Edapaddi Palaniswami, seeking space inside the mausoleum complex of the departed leader’s mentor C N Annadurai at the Marina.

The mortal remains of AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran and his successor J Jayalalithaa are buried near Annadurai’s memorial at Marina beach.

After the government rejected their demand, the DMK moved the state high court, challenging the decision.

All opposition party leaders — Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder Ramadoss, Communist Party of India’s state secretary Mutharasan, Vijayakanth of DMDK — have urged the state government to allow Karunanidhi’s burial near Anna Memorial.

Political analyst Tharaasu Shyaam said the bodies of Rajagopalachari and Kamaraj — both Congressmen — were kept in Gandhi Mandapam since they had a connection with the Gandhian principle. “However, Karunanidhi evolved from Dravidian principle. So, it is necessary to bury him near his mentor Annadurai,” he said.
