Flyers in Mumbai had to wait for long on Friday morning as short spells of rain coupled with routine congestion at the airport delayed flights by up to an hour.

Air traffic managers said that small delays of 10-15 minutes during the peak morning caused the backlog.

“The congestion in Mumbai is so high that irrespective of heavy rains such delays would be routine. Our focus is to avoid flight diversions which we have been able to achieve until now,” said a senior official from the air traffic control department. The official added that the runway visibility was above 800 metres- the required range for safe operations. “The Sun was also out for some time.”

Some airlines warned passengers about the delays.

The morning peak hour between 7am to 10am saw more late arrivals as compared to departures.

A Mumbai airport spokesperson however, said that the average delays were up to 25 minutes.
