A 32-year-old man helping his sister in getting divorce was shot dead by her husband in Sonepat on Saturday night, police said. The deceased was identified as Ravikant, a resident of Silana village in Khakrhoda block of the district.

Police said Ravikant and his mother were returning from their agriculture field on Saturday night when his brother-in-law Narender came on a bike and opened fire at him. Several bullets hit him in his face and neck, killing him on the spot, police added.

Vitim’s mother Santosh Devi said she witnessed the incident, but was a few meters behind her when the attack happened.

“The investigation revealed that Narender used to blame Heena’s brother for insisting her to file divorce. He killed Ravikant in anger,” said investigation officer Ranbir Singh.

As per police, Ravikant’s sister Heena got married to Narender a few years back. However, Heena came back home to live with her parents as relationship between the couple turned sour. She recently filed for divorce, but the case was pending in the court.

Singh added that Narender was presently on the run. “Police have found that the accused is a history sheeter who was previously arrested in some other case. A case of murder and under Arms Act was registered against the accused.
