Students with 40% or more disability will get extra time of one hour for each of the two papers at the Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) Advanced exam for entrance to the 23 IITs, a notice on the official website of JEE(Advanced) 2019 said.
There are two exams on the same day and the total duration of each paper is of three hours. The exam will be held on May 27. Till last year, the extra time was given only to those physically disabled students who had a scribe with them for answering the questions.
This year, the top 2.45 lakh students from the JEE(Mains) will be allowed to write the exam.
The entire JEE (Advanced) 2019 exam will be conducted in a fully computer based test mode. Registrations for the exam will begin on May 3 and close on May 9. “The facility of Compensatory Time — 20 minutes per hour — will be given to PwD [People with Disability] candidates with specified benchmark disability. The request has to be made with proper documentation at the time of registration. In case the candidate avails the above facility/ies and found ineligible at a later date his/her candidature shall be cancelled for JEE (Advanced) 2019,” says a notice on the official website of JEE(Advanced) 2019.
The students have to mention about the degree of their disability while registering for the exam. The IITs will this year offer 500 seats to the economically weaker sections. In January, the Centre had announced 10% reservations in jobs and educational institutions to economically weaker sections (EWS) from the general category in a move that, it said, was done to provide social equality. Implementing the EWS quota can be staggered over two years. It has also been decided to improve the gender balance in the undergraduate programs at the IITs to at least 17% in 2019-20 by creating supernumerary seats specifically for female candidates, without any reduction in the number of seats that was made available to gender neutral candidates in the previous academic year.
