The encounter took place in Naugam after the army noticed suspicious movement, they said.

Handwara superintendent of police Ghulam Jeelani said the gunfight started in the early hours of Monday. “Three militants have been killed and the operation is on,” he said.

The operation which lasted for around 18 hours also led to the recovery of war-like stores that included guns, grenades, magazines, wireless sets and binoculars besides other things, said an army spokesman in Srinagar.

“They (militants) resorted to indiscriminate firing on being detected by the army troops. In the ensuing gun battle, three terrorists were killed. Army troops conducted a massive follow-up search operation lasting over 18 hours, which resulted in recovery of a large cache of war-like stores,” the spokesman said.
