Two college students, shooting a video against suicide, were run over by a train on tracks between Dum Dum and Belghoria in the northern suburbs of Kolkata on Monday.

Soishob Dolui (20) and Sunil Tanti (19), residents of Sodepur in North 24 Parganas district adjacent to Kolkata, studied in Surendranath and Bangabasi College in Kolkata.

“They were acting. I was recording the video. I was at a spot just beside the tracks. We were shooting for some time. When trains came earlier we moved away. But this time, we could not realise,” said Shounadip Santra, another first year student.

“From the video of Santra, it is clear that the three were so engrossed in shooting that they could not hear the oncoming train’s whistle,” rail police superintendent at Sealdah, Ashesh Biswas said, adding that further investigation was on.

Dolui was playing the role of a college student who wanted to commit suicide by jumping in front of a train after being unsuccessful in the annual college examination. Tanti played the role of a friend who convinces him not to take the extreme step.

Santra told the police that they wanted to shoot the video on the tracks to make it look realistic.

While Dolui’s father Shanti works as a security guard with a private security agency, Tanti’s father, Rajen works as a welder mechanic.

Both the families were aware of their plans of doing the video that they planned to upload on social networking sites.
