Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh to be new navy vice chief

Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh will on Sunday take over as the new vice chief of the Indian Navy after Vice Admiral SN Ghormade retired on Friday, officials familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

He was the lead drafter for the Indian Navy’s Maritime Doctrine, 2009, Strategic Guidance to Transformation, 2015, and the Indian Maritime Security Strategy, 2015, the officials said. Singh is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, and commissioned into the navy’s executive branch in 1986.

He specialised in Navigation and Direction in 1992, and attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course at UK in 2000. He has undergone the Naval Higher Command Course in 2009 at Naval War College, Mumbai, and the National Security Strategy Course in 2012 at the National Defence College, Delhi.

He has held a range of command, training and staff appointments, and has served on most class of ships of the Indian Navy over the past three decades, the officials said. He has also served as the Indian naval attache in Iran.

His previous appointments in Flag rank include Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Communications, Space and Network Centric Operations) at Naval HQ, Flag Officer Sea Training at Kochi, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet at Mumbai, Commandant Naval War College at Goa, and Controller Personnel Services.

In some other top appointments, Vice Admiral Suraj Berry on Saturday took over as the navy’s Chief of Personnel, and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan took over as Controller Personnel Services. Vice Admiral Atul Anand took over as director general of naval operations.
