The extradition hearing for liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya began in a London court. Here are the highlights.

A joint team of the CBI and ED was in London for the extradition hearing on Monday in a London court of beleaguered liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya, who is wanted in India over non-payment of bank loans and a case of fraud and money laundering.

Here are highlights:

5.25pm: Prosecution lawyer Mark Summers presents details of bank loans sought by Vijay Mallya from SBI, IDBI totalling Rs 2,000 crore. Internal appraisal notes of banks quoted.

4.55pm: Mark Summers, the lawyer for Crown Prosecution Service, begins to outline case against Vijay Mallya, alleges he misled banks in India.

4.40pm: Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot enters court, Mark Summers, lawyer for Crown Prosecution Service (for India), informs her of details about papers containing index and responses to witness statements.

4.25pm: Vijay Mallya enters court and sits in the dock. His legal team brings boxes of papers. Trial yet to begin; Mallya’s bail ends today; magistrate Emma Arbuthnot expected to extend it.

4pm: Fire drill at Westminster magistrates court ends. Court to assemble soon.

3.20pm: I have said repeatedly that these (allegations of fraud) are false, fabricated and baseless charges and that is my stand: Mallya

3.15pm: When asked why he went to the UK and did not stand trial in India, Mallya tells television channels outside the court: “I have been living in England since 1992.”

3pm: Vijay Mallya arrives in court.

2.50pm: According to a CBI official, the agency has submitted a 2,000-page dossier on Mallya, detailing how he cheated Indian public sector banks and diverted the loans taken for Kingfisher Airlines over the years.

2.24pm: Mallya’s lawyer Clare Montgomery arrives at the court with documents. The trial will begin soon.
